Should I Go For A Regular Credit Card?
by: Tom Tessin

You may find that researching credit cards is a little tougher than expected. You notice that there are millions of types of credit cards out there but you just don’t know which one to choose. You may find that when you are looking for a student credit card, you are only limited to a few cards with high APR rates, etc.

Sometimes you may find yourself drifting off into other credit card categories with better rates, better rewards. Let’s face, probably everything is better in the “regular” credit card category.

You are probably asking yourself by now, “Should I just go for a regular credit card?” The simple question is no. If you’re a student and you’re applying for your first credit card, chances are that you will most likely get declined. Regular credit cards are designed for people with established credit. Since most students don’t have established credit, it’s going to be very tough to get approved.

The reason why the rates are lower and the rewards are better is because the credit card companies are offering these rates to people who have established credit, therefore, the credit card companies will trust them with their loaned out money.

Let’s take a real life scenario. You would most likely lend $10 to a long time friend because you know them very well and you know that person will most likely pay you back. Now, would you lend a person you just met yesterday the $10? Probably not. Credit card companies look at it the same way. They want to get to know you before you can start spending all of their cash. This is why you will receive such a low credit card limit when applying for your first student credit card.

Instead of wasting your time applying for tons of cards and getting declined for them, making you hopeless. You should focus on the student credit cards, apply for one, and get approved. From here, you can spend the next couple years while in school to establish credit. Once you establish that credit and get a nice score, you will then be able to apply for the regular credit cards.

Just remember when using your credit card, that you’re responsible and you don’t dig yourself in a deeper hole. Just because you have a credit card for a few years, this doesn’t mean that you will most likely be accepted to another credit card program. Make sure you read around online to find out exactly how you can boost your credit card score. There are many helpful resources, including our resource center here at findcollegecards.com
