Should Parents Worry About a Student Credit Card?
by: Tom Tessin
If you’re a parent and you’re concerned about your teenager getting his/her first credit card, there’s really no need to fear. Like anything in life, there’s always going to be those pros and cons. What matters the most is what outweighs the most.
The purpose of this article is to explain exactly why you shouldn’t have to worry about your son or daughter getting a credit card. Like most Americans, credit cards are the way to establish credit. It’s the parent’s responsibility to teach their son or daughter how to manage their money right. This is of course, if your child listens to you.
Here’s a great list on why you, the parent shouldn’t have to worry about their son or daughter carrying around a piece of plastic.
The convenient factor
We are living in the digital age where a lot of things are purchased on the internet. The only ways most purchases can be made online are by credit cards. If your child is looking to save money on books per se, the internet is a great place to find bargains such as eBay and half.com. The nice thing about credit cards is that they protect the consumer. As you may know by now, if you don’t make the purchase, you’re only liable up to fifty dollars.
The tracking ability
Let’s say you make a deal to let your child sign up for a credit card and you tell them that you’ll make a deal with them to hold responsibility with money. You make the offer of paying twenty percent of the bill but the only downside is that you, the parent get the bill so you can track their spending.
The nice thing about this is you’re able to see exactly what your child is spending money on. You have to remember that they probably aren’t buying illegal contraband seeing drug dealers can’t use credit cards. If you don’t feel like paying twenty percent, chances are that you’re child won’t let you see the bill. Once their eighteen, it’s their legal right to do whatever they please.
The credit card strict policy
You’ll be surprised how strict credit card companies are with college students. A lot of the credit cards that cater to college students only allow a student to have a small credit limit. This credit limit is usually only around the five hundred, sometimes the one thousand dollar range. The nice thing about some credit cards is that they actually reward you for paying you on time and doing well in class. Now, who said credit card companies are evil?
If these three topics haven’t changed your mind as a parent yet, then you don’t need to fear just yet. The list goes on and the pros far outweigh the cons. Just think of where you’re at right now in life and imagine yourself without a credit card. Credit cards are accepted just about everywhere. Their convenient, fraud proof, and easy to carry.
