Money Tips for College Students
by: Tom Tessin
If you’re thinking about joining college this fall or you’re already attending college, you’ve probably realized that money is pretty scarce if you don’t have a job or you can’t find enough time to find a job around all of your studying and classes. As long as you know how money operates, these tips should help you better save your money and manage it.
Saving is the key here
Like I mentioned above, if you don’t have the money, why sign up for a credit card and put everything on credit? This is a bad idea seeing that if you don’t pay your bill off in time, you’re going to be slapped with those ridiculous interest rates. So the next time you want to put a play station 3 on your credit card, you better think twice.
As you learn when you get older, the more you save, the easier it’s going to be keeping your banking account in the positive numbers instead of the negatives. If you get the mindset of saving instead of spending, you’re going to be going down the right road. The right road means the less likely you’re going to go in debt or declare bankruptcy.
Budget your money now
Every month, you should prepare a budget. Even if you’re only making one hundred dollars a month, you should be tracking down your expenses. Creating a budget is extremely easy and only takes a few minutes of your time.
In order to create a budget, simply write down what you’re going to spend your money on each month no matter what. This might include gas, rent, cell phone, etc. From there, you’re going to have your leftover money. With this leftover money, you’re going to set some aside for savings and the rest can either go toward leisure activities, etc. IF you stick to a plan like this, your money will work a lot harder for you.
Live cheap
Just because you’re going to college, this doesn’t mean you have to spend your whole life savings when you’re going there. You’re going to find that when you’re going to college that some students have rich parents and some kids just blow their money on everything. These are the kids you want to avoid when spending your cash. The old rule goes a little something like this, “The people you hang around are the ones that you act like.”
Other great ways to save money on campus are buying used text books, living without a car, and living on campus. Don’t get an apartment because the rest of your friends are because if you do, this is going to be a huge bill each month especially if you don’t have a job.
The money tips for college students can go on and on. It’s up to you to manage your money properly and spend wisely. If you just start and follow the details above, you’ll be on the right path in no time.
