Avoiding Student Credit Card Debt
by: Tom Tessin

A credit card can be a dangerous item.  When you apply for your first or second credit card, it’s important that you follow a few tips before you start using your card.  Without the proper knowledge, you can seriously fall into debt and hurt your credit score, something every American shouldn’t get their self into.

Believe it or not, fighting credit card debt isn’t that hard at all.  It requires only a few things, self-discipline and budgeting.  If you can remember these two words and you follow through with it, you won’t have any worries about falling into debt.  Besides these main two points, if you follow the simple tips mentioned below, you will be a debt-free person.

Know your bank balance

When you carry a credit card, you can’t treat it as free money.  You must have the mindset of paying it off every month.  As you should know by now, if you don’t pay it off in full each month, you are going to risk paying huge late fees.  With a student credit card, these late fees can vary anywhere from 20% and on.  It’s important that you know how much money you have saved up and how much you’re able to spend each month.

Treat your card like cash

Whenever you make a purchase, have a mindset that you’re handing the cashier cash.  People get themselves into debt because they view the credit card as a card and not money.  They assume that they will be able to pay it off in no time and not have to worry about any debt troubles in the future.  If you treat your card like cash, your spending habits won’t be as bad as the guy next to you.

Carry one credit card

A general rule of thumb is that you carry a credit card and debit card.  This ensures you that you’ll know exactly how much you’re spending each month on that card.  If you have more than one credit card in your purse/wallet, you may find it confusing to keep up on how much you’ve been spending.  With one card, it’s a lot easier to keep track of.

Don’t forget your student loans

While it may be nice to hold a credit card during college, you have to remember that once you’re done with school, you’re going to have the hefty student loan bill.  If you have a Visa payment and student loan payment each month, you may find it hard to pay them all off.  This is why it’s important that you pay off your debts
These are just a few simple tips that you can follow when you’re using your student credit card.  There are only imaginative tips out there that can help you with your spending habits.  It’s more of a mind game when you’re trying to stay out of debt.  If you treat your credit card with cash and you have a lot of self discipline, you’ll be one of the few in America that doesn’t have to worry about debt.
