Whether you’re a student or you’re a person that’s going to compose a letter of recommendation for a future college student, it’s important that you know a few steps you can take in order to create the perfect letter of recommendation, so that you hopefully increase his/her chances of getting to the school of their choice.  Writing a letter like this isn’t hard, in fact, it can be quite easy if you follow a few pointers I have mentioned below.

How well do you know the person?  Depending on who you are and how you’re related to the person you’re writing the letter for, it’s important that you get as much information as you can from this person so that the letter contains more than the simple tidbits about them.  Get information on this person’s character, what they like to do, their goals in life, etc.

It will always help if you can obtain a copy of the scholarship information or the college’s information on what they want when it comes to the letter.  This way you can make the copy as perfect as possible, making it potentially easier for the student to get accepted to his/her college of their choice.

How to write the letter – Once you know exactly what you’re going to write about, there are going to be some things that you have to include on your paper.  They are as follows:

  • The recipient and the address
  • Any college information regarding the student (this will be noted on the sheet)
  • Your personal information such as phone, e-mail.

Now that you know what should be included in the letter, I will next point out what you should put in the letter that should help the future student get accepted.  When you’re writing your letter, make sure you point out how you are and why you’re important to this child’s life.  Never be afraid to write something that doesn’t sound important, even if you’re the neighborhood baker.  Everyone is important and plays many roles to many people’s lives.

Next, in the body, explain why he/she should be accepted and why they could play a big role to the university.  Basically, try and be as positive as possible and never ever point out the downsides, they don’t want to hear these regardless of what they are.

When you finally close out the letter, make sure you make it obvious on how the colleges can contact you if they want to ask you further questions.  Be sure you include your phone number, e-mail, etc.  From my experiences, most colleges won’t call just like jobs and resumes but it never huts to add these things.

A college letter of recommendation shouldn’t be a mile long.  Instead, you should write something short and sweet explaining why this person should be accepted.  It isn’t a hard process.  Speak from the heart and tell them what you know and hopefully everything works out in the long haul.
