If you’ve just graduated high school or you’re an adult that is looking at going back to school, you may have that fear of going back.  Going to college can be intimidating at first and completely foreign.  Having to get to know everyone all over again, having professors, a new campus, and different lifestyle is kind of hard to deal with at first.  It’s always that first day and first week that scares everyone.  Once you get into the swing of things everything is fine, it’s just that new student intimidation.  To make things a little easier and less hectic, continue to read below about what to expect the first week of college.

Choosing classes – You may need to sign up for classes the week of or a few weeks ahead.  Whatever the situation, make sure you don’t overdue it.  If you’ve never been to college before it is highly recommended that you only take three classes that are four credits.  3 classes * 4 = 12 credits, which is full time.  College can be very time consuming so you never want to overdue your self by taking too many classes or taking too hard of classes.

Going to class – Once you’re already signed up, the next step is to simply go to class.  This is usually the hardest part for a new student.  No one knows each other at first and it is a little uncomfortable.  Just pretend you’re back in high school and it’s another high school class.  Make sure you bring a pencil and paper to take any notes from your professor.  Always come prepared to class!

Getting a syllabus – Once you’re in class, your professor will most likely hand out a syllabus.  This will tell you everything that you’re doing and the day you’re going to do it.  College is a lot more organized than high school.  These are nice to have to refer to and look at head.

How is your professor? – Next, you’re going to want to grade your professor.  If they seem awful and you don’t feel comfortable in the class, you may want to drop the class entirely.  To see what the professor is really like check out, www.rateyourprofessor.com.  This is based on college students who have had your professor previously.

Textbooks – Once your professor goes over the syllabus, they will most likely tell you what textbooks you’ll need.  From there, you will either go to the college book store or order them online at websites like www.amazon.com, or www.ebay.com.  Amazon is one of the best websites for finding the best prices on books!

Create a schedule – College usually takes up a lot of time so make sure you make a schedule for yourself.  If you have a job and you’re currently working make sure you make days just for work and days just for going to school and studying.  Creating a schedule will affect and help your grades tremendously.

School supplies – Now that you have an idea on what the class is going to be like you can get your school supplies.  This includes any notebooks, binders, pencils, pens, textbooks, backpacks and anything else you may need.

The first week of college is usually always a little bit overwhelming, but don’t worry it only gets better.  Once you’re into the swing of things it will feel just like high school all over again and you’ll be much more comfortable with your surroundings.
