After high school most people often think about attending a community college. It is a very realistic way to start your future career. There are many benefits of going to a community college. Not only is it usually cheaper but it’s usually closer to home. Usually you can take the same kind of class at a cheaper rate for the same credit. Once you graduate high school you are so used to how high school runs, and you may wonder what college life is like.
- Once school is out for the summer and you graduate from high school you will now be thinking of college. A college semester usually starts in the fall. Anywhere from August to September is usually when classes for the fall term start.
- Most colleges have a college catalog that will be mailed to you regarding classes for the term. If not most colleges will have a website listing all the classes. Either way you will then look through all the classes and find the ones that will fit your routine best. Most college students sign up for 12 credit hours a semester to stay under their parents insurance. The classes come in usually either three credit hours or four. So if you want to take a 12 credit hour semester you will either take four, three credit hour classes or three, four credit hour classes. Don’t forget you can always take more or less than 12 credit hours per semester.
- Once you are signed up you will look at the schedule you have picked and find out when you start. Your first day of school many professors just give a brief message on what the class will be about. You will also most likely get a syllabus for the semester. Your syllabus is a very helpful thing you can refer back to. It usually says when all of your tests will be, a calendar for the semester with important dates and the rules of the class. The first day is usually pretty laid back and easy to absorb.
- The people in your class can range from kids to elderly people. There are all different age groups in college. It is usually thought of as a better atmosphere because people are paying to take these classes so they really want to learn. People are more focused and eager to learn
- Usually most classes have two scheduled dates to attend. It is usually either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Although sometimes it’s just one day a week or the weekend even. Monday-Thursday is just usually the more popular times to go.
- The homework for college is totally different than high school. Rarely will you read aloud in class and talk about each page in the textbook. The professor will give a brief overview about what you’re learning and it is up to you to go farther in depth. Homework is usually a lot less than high school. Grades are mostly calculated by quizzes, tests and exams with a few homework assignments thrown in there.
As you can see college is pretty different than high school. In college you can use the restroom and leave class when you please, as to high school you need to ask for permission. There are many differences between the two. College is most likely liked more than high school due to its freedom and independence. There are no scheduled dates where you have to be at class unless an exam usually. They both have their differences but also both have their ups and downs.
