Studying abroad is something that is talked about a lot when in college.  There are so many great opportunities when you study abroad.  Not only do you get a chance to really learn the foreign language, but you get the opportunity to explore the world, learn about the different cultures, and get a great sense for the atmosphere.  Have you been keeping it in mind and are thinking about considering it for the future?  If so you want to make sure you make the decision and to do so you must consider a few things before committing to anything.

Expenses – A very important question is will you be able to afford it?  Some college cover a certain amount of fees but the daily cost of eating, shopping and other expenses can be very expensive.  Make sure you have a plan that will work if you’re considering this big step.

Being far away – Do you tend to get homesick easily?  If so you really want to ask yourself if you’ll be able to handle being far away from your family and friends.  This is a big step and it’s not easy to just fly back on a plane and be home.  If you do end up getting homesick and it’s unexpected, be sure to interact with a lot of people and try to make a friendship with them.

Job status – Do you have a job that you plan on being with for a while?  If so, check if it is okay with your work that you take such a long leave.  If you have a job that pays well, and is very good to you, you really want to keep that in mind.  If you’re doing this to go farther in life and maybe teach a foreign language one day then consider it but if you’re just taking college classes and want to travel for fun think hard about the situation.

Timing – If you consider studying abroad, be sure it doesn’t interfere with college now.   If you really want to graduate early and have plans already for the future, be sure you think about the timing.  If you’re there for a half year or longer it may put you behind in college.  Also, if it means you can’t finish the classes that you’re already enrolled in now, that may be a problem as well.   You don’t want to loose money on classes that you’ve already paid for.

Studying abroad is a major step in a college student’s life.  There is a lot to consider which makes the decision process even harder.  If studying abroad is something you’ve always dreamed about, go for it.  If it is something that you’re unsure about and makes you wonder if you’ll really like it, you may not be ready.  Go with your gut instinct and if you decide to not go after all, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a trip and vacation there for a while.
