Once you walk around campus, you’re going to realize that a majority of students out there have  a lot of credit cards, but what exactly do they use their credit card for?  Do they use it for things such as school supplies, or are they careless, and blowing it on stuff such as party supplies?

The Sallie Mae National Study of Usage Rates and Trends in 2009 came out with some great statistics on what college students use their credit cards for.  Here are the results for 2009 compared to those back in 2008.

Item 2008 2004
Textbooks 76% 71%
Supplies 75% 74%
Commuting 54% 29%
Computer 41% 18%
Tuition 30% 24%
Fees 30% 29%
Room and Board 17% 6%
Food 84% 71%
Clothing 70% 68%
Cosmetics 69% 49%
Travel 46% 30%
Gifts 44% 39%
Medical 34% 13%
Entertainment 31% 25%
Telephone 27% 30%
Cable TV / DVD 24% 23%
Music 23% 37%
Rent 18% 8%
Internet 15% 10%

As you can see, not a whole lot has changed since 2004.    Some of the bigger things that have changed are due to either medical costs, because of the higher fees, cosmetics, as well as computers.

As students spend their money on just about everything out there, what exactly do you plan on spending your credit on?  Do you plan on paying it off on full?  If you have one today, what do you generally purchase?
