posted by FindCollegeCards.comDo you have a child/young adult that is college? If so this may be a difficult time in your life. You see that your child is finally growing up and is going further with their life. College is an overwhelming time in your child’s life as well. It can be a huge challenge and difficult time for them. Although if you didn’t know already you as a parent help with whether they succeed in college or fail. Even though your child does the most and can carry their own grades the decisions you make may be affecting your child. So if you have a child in college you may want to go over some of the parents tips below.
Don’t choose their classes for them – Although you may be paying for their college don’t choose the classes for them. Let them be their own person and make their own decisions in life. Your child is most likely going to do worse if you are making them take classes that have no interest to them.
Watch what you encourage – Also don’t choose your child’s future career. You can suggest things they would be good at in life but never tell them to do a certain thing. They will then feel obligated to do what you say and may end up taking classes and finding them in a career they don’t even like.
Talk to them – Once you’re child is about to start college encourage them to go see an advisor. If they have a plan and a goal they want to achieve for a certain career talk to them. Telling them to talk to an advisor is the best thing you can do for them. The advisor will then tell them what classes they need now and in the future to get on the right track. Avoid telling them what classes they need because you may be surprised at what they really need. So instead of telling them what to take tell them to talk to and advisor.
Community college to start off – It is highly recommend that you send your child to a community college for the first year or two. When at a community college you get the feel for a college atmosphere and you can save a ton of money. Community college’s offer the same classes as a university for cheaper. Definitely keep this idea in mind. It isn’t for everyone but is something to consider.
Don’t make plans for your child – When i college students minds are everywhere. They are worried about studying for the exam that is coming up next week and the assignment that they’ve been working on for the past 10 hours. So try to avoid distracting your child as much as possible. They know what they have to do, and when it needs to be done. If there are plans coming up in the future ask your child if that time is okay first before you set a for sure date.
Show them you care and talk – A college student not only feels overwhelmed most of the time but they really feel bad when they do bad on an assignment or test. Ask them how they are doing and show them you care about them. They need comfort and like to talk about school if you ask. If you notice them studying all week for a test be sure to ask how they did when you know they’ve taken it. So try to acknowledge them as much as possible.
There are many things parents can do to help their child through the rough time at college. Consider some of these tips and be sure to keep them in mind. There are many benefits to all the tips listed above and can help the two of you tremendously!
