Most of us have an idea what we want to be when we first start college.  We sign up for classes, finish a couple semesters, then realize maybe this isn’t the career we want after all.  We all hope this doesn’t happen to us, and we hope we find the perfect one right from the beginning, but that’s not always the case.  If you’re stuck changing your major when you’ve already completed a few semesters worth of college, it’s not the end of the world.

Instead of panicking, and getting upset about it, see what you can do to help yourself get back on the right path.

How many transfer? – First, we hope that the new career we want to get involved with will accept some of the classes we’ve already worked hard for.  Write down all the classes you’ve taken already, how many will transfer to your new degree?  A lot of them may transfer as a general education or elective class.

Did you learn a lot? – If you feel bad about making the change in plans, don’t.  College is great because you learn a lot.  If you’ve learned a lot that you didn’t know already, think of it as learning beyond your expectations.  It’s great to learn and be informed about things we don’t know.

Is it worth it? – Just to make sure you make the right decision.  Will all the schooling that you’ve completed be worth dropping?  This only goes for classes that won’t transfer over.  Do you think you will like this new career that much more?  Just ask yourself if it’s worth it before you make any final decisions.

How much did you spend? – Unfortunately some people go to college and spend a lot of money on classes they’ll never use due to a change in major.  Are you one of these people?  If you spent a couple thousand okay, that sucks but it’s not the end of the world.  Although, if you spend thousands you may want to make sure you are really making the right decision.

It’s okay – Don’t beat yourself up about this, and don’t let others make you feel bad.  It’s your life, and you want to make sure you’re happy in the future.  They aren’t the ones that have to keep going to school, so if it makes you happy, who cares what other people say.

Everyday college students are changing their majors.  You’re not alone.  Do what makes you happy, really think things over, and definitely consider some of the tips mentioned above!
