Surviving on a College Student Holiday Budget
posted by FindCollegeCards.comAs we all know, college is very expensive. When college is as expensive as it is, it is very hard for college students to save money. There are many things that get in the way like expensive gas prices, high prices on tuition, and all the other little things that tend to add up. What makes it even harder to spare money is when the holidays come up. Holidays are supposed to be a wonderful time of year and a time to just get together with the family and enjoy the holiday season. Although, how can you do that if all you can think about is how you don’t have money to buy presents? Don’t stress, instead read below on how you can survive as a college student with a holiday budget.
Save ahead – If you can and it’s not too late, be sure you save as much money as you can. Whether this means you can’t go see a movie with your friends or no Starbucks for the week do it! Saving little by little will help you tremendously when it comes time to dish out money for presents.
Groceries – As always, only get grocery items that are on sale. If you do this for a couple weeks and really limit what you buy, you’ll be just fine. Our grocery bill is one thing that we CAN control. So be sure that you’re looking for the great deals, and you’re shopping as smart as you can.
Gas money – With the gas prices today, it is also very hard to save those extra couple bucks. So what you’ll have to do is just drive less. Think about where you have to go and if you can just make all your trips in one drive. Avoid going out of your way to go somewhere, coming home in between classes and going to places that are unnecessary. It may be just one trip but it does tend to add up fairly quick.
Make what you can – It is said that presents made by the person are the best. It means you’ve taken your time to really make something special. Also, making things can tend to be a lot cheaper than going out and spending money on a gift card. If you’re in need of present ideas for someone just simply look at the persons interests, and what they like and try to make a present out of it. Another idea that is always great and means a lot is a scrapbook, photo album or picture frame. Putting this together is always a wonderful present and is usually on the cheaper side.
Any credit cards? – Often when you have a credit card that you use frequently, you will receive some kind of rewards points. Often people forget about this which creates a large amount of thank you points. What can you get with those thank you/reward points? You can get pretty much anything from gift cards, electronic items, travel discounts, you name it. So if you’re really struggling for money, get a gift card for someone with your reward points!
Coupons – When shopping around the holidays, stores are going to do anything they can to get customers in their stores. What is a common thing they do? They use coupons! Be sure to start your shopping early and look for as many coupons as possible. If you know a store that someone really likes, keep your eyes peeled for coupons. Check sales ads, the Internet and going in there frequently to make sure you catch those good deals!
A college students budget is always rough but there is always a way around it. Simply keep these things in mind and make your holidays a lot less stressful. Remember, holidays are supposed to be enjoyable not hectic and a time to feel bad about yourself because you can’t afford the nicest presents. Instead have a good time, keep these tips in mind and take time to relax!
