As a single mom, you’re probably contemplating if you should go back to school or no.  In my opinion, I always think that going back to school is a fantastic investment.  Not only are you going to make money when you advance your career, you’re going to find that you’re going to learn a lot in the profession that you want to head to.

If you’re thinking about going back to college, here are a few tips that you should follow in order to get yourself on the right track.

Talk with a counselor

The first thing that you’re going to want to do is talk with a counselor at your local college / university.  Sit down with them and explain your plans.  Never use money as an excuse because you’re going to find that there is so much assistance out there.  You’re going to want to ask them what the process is like, etc.

Research your career

The Internet is a great place to start when it comes down to researching your career.   What you’re going to want to do is research the hottest careers in the future market today.  Find something that will be in demand 5-10 years from now.  You want to chase what you love, rather than for the money.

Get financial assistance

There’s probably a good chance that you’re going to need financial assistance and that’s okay.  You’re going to find that there are grants, financial aid, and so much more that you can apply for.  Even if you think that you’re not going to be eligible for it, you will still want to apply.  The worst thing that they are going to say is, “no!”

Don’t think for the worst case scenario

Many single moms just keep making excuses to keep them from going to school.  If you don’t have the money, you can get financial aid.  If you don’t have a babysitter, you can get aid for this as well.  You will find that many colleges out there have day care programs that you can take advantage of.  This would be included in your rent.

Just sit back for a second and think about your job path today.  Many without a degree generally don’t have a great skill set.  Since many employers demand some sort of degree in today’s market, it never hurts, because I can promise that you’re not going to regret this in the long run!
