Renting College Textbooks – Good Idea?
posted by FindCollegeCards.comBeing a college student isn’t cheap and textbooks aren’t cheap either. Whether you buy new or used, did you know that you can rent college textbooks and save up to 80%? I know it sounds too good to be true but if you can rent DVDs, you can rent college textbooks as well. Thousands of students each year rent college textbooks from websites like Chegg.com. Here are some reasons on why you should rent textbooks -
Save money- This one is a no brain-er, if you want to save money, start renting your textbooks. Buying used may save you a few bucks but it won’t save you as much as renting a book. As long as you keep the book in great shape and return it in the condition you received it in, you’ll be fine when it comes to avoiding fees.
Save time- A lot of students will buy their textbooks used and then sell them back on EBay or the bookstore. Most of the time, you’ll lose money doing this. Not only that, you’re going to have to use up your time. Instead of having to sell, wait for it to sell, ship it, and everything else under the sun. Online text book rental companies will make it easy. When you’re done with your book, simply pack it back up and send it back.
Save the earth- How do I save the Earth when I rent textbooks? It’s easy. Every time you rent a textbook, you’re not buying a new one. Instead, you’re just simply taking a book from someone else that rented it before you. So, think of it as the clothes you got from your older brother or sister. This is the same concept. If you’re a big environmental person, definitely think of this factor, every person counts!
Renting books is a great idea if you think you’re never going to need those books in the future again. If you’re a programmer and you need to reference particular books, you may want to keep some, instead of renting but if it’s a silly English book filled with stupid stories, you may want to rent it will literally save you hundreds over your college career!

If you really want to save some money, you can try the rent-it-yourself model. Use a price comparison site like CampusBooks.com to buy your book for the lowest price. Then, at the end of the semester, use BookScouter.com to sell it back for the highest price. In most cases you will end up spending about 10-20% of the retail price of the book.
