Overcoming Homesickness in College
posted by FindCollegeCards.com
When we go off to college for the fall, a lot of us don’t plan on ever getting homesick. Actually, the ones that didn’t think would get homesick usually are the ones upset. We often think we made the wrong decision, and we want to come home immediately. We feel like we are so far away from our friends, and family, yet we don’t take a look at what will be ahead. If you’re feeling homesick, don’t give up, instead consider a few of these tips to get you feeling better!
Call – Just remember, you’re only a phone call away. Not to mention, with the technology these days you can Facebook, Myspace, text, call, E-mail, etc! There are so many ways of communicating, don’t feel like since you’re not home you can’t talk with friends and family.
Make a trip – Plan to make a trip home, and/or have someone come up to visit you. It can make a fun trip, and you guys will enjoy each others company.
Atmosphere – Create an atmosphere that you’re happy with. Make your dorm room as like home as possible, and buy some new decorations to spruce up your room.
Distractions – Be sure to create distractions! Whether you are joining groups, getting a side job to make a couple extra bucks, or you’re volunteering somewhere, be sure to get out and about. This will not only distract you, but also you will be giving yourself the opportunity to make new friends!
Friends – Try to become more social, and find some friends to hang out with. Make friends with the people in your classes, in your building where your dorm room is, and try to make friends with your roommate! There are people there just like you, don’t feel alone.
Homesickness is something everyone goes thought at some point in life. Whether we’re on vacation, we moved out of our old house, or like your situation, away at college, we all have this problem. Although, if we never went in the first place we’d be sad because we gave up, wouldn’t be friends with the people we are today, and we wouldn’t of gotten to experience it like we wanted.

I was pretty homesick my first few months, but it got a lot better when I made some good friends and got more involved in activities. Now I think of all of the things I would’ve missed if I would’ve given up and just gone home.
