Improving your credit score isn’t that hard if you know what to do as a college student.  I hear it all the time.  Younger adults often wonder how they are supposed to build credit when they don’t have a credit card history.  Well, getting your first credit card isn’t that hard.  It just takes a little effort and research but I promise you, the card does come.  I’m going to show you a few steps you can take in order to improve your credit score as a college student.

Piggyback with your parents  – If you’re having a hard time finding a credit card, you can always add yourself to their account.  Be careful with this technique though because your parents may not be as good with their credit as you think.  If your parents do have great credit, this is a great way to just sit back and enjoy their credit.  As long as they pay their bills off on time and you’re on their account, you can help your score.

Start with a student credit card - Most young adults often pass over the thought of a student credit card.  Instead, they tend to find other alternatives that quite often don’t work.  A student credit card is a great way for a younger person to establish credit.  Since these cards don’t require a credit history, many find it very easy to get approved for one.

Go to your bank- Whether you’re apart of a local credit union or you bank with a major bank, you may want to go to your local branch and see if they offer credit cards that can help you with your credit.  You’ll be surprised with the selection that some banks have.  It never hurts to go in the next time you cash a check.  The banks will be more than willing to give you a brochure on their credit cards and what they have to offer.

Think outside the box – A credit card isn’t the only route you have to take when you’re looking to improve your credit score.  You should also look into applying for a cell phone, car insurance, etc.  Most of these will help you with your credit score.  As long as you pay your bill on time, your credit score will rise steadily.

Improving your credit score takes time.  It won’t happen overnight.  If you’re having troubles finding a credit card that suits your needs or you just can’t find something that can help your credit, don’t give up!  There’s something out there for everyone regardless of your credit history.
