Career planning is a big step that many college students over look when they are planning to attend college.  Many of them figure that they can simply just take “general education” courses and worry about choosing a career when the time comes.  What many students don’t realize is that when they take those courses, they may find out down the road that they don’t even apply to their degree!

What does this mean for them?  It means you’re just throwing your money away.  Not only are student loans going to be rough at the end of your college career, you don’t want to worthless classes as well.  This is why career planning is important and I’ll show you some steps you can take in order to find the right career that you’ll truly enjoy.

Take Career Tests

The Internet is filled with many free tools and you should take advantage of them!  When it comes to career planning, I highly recommend you check out career test.  The ones you generally get for free aren’t going to be as good as the ones you pay for.  If you’re serious about finding a career, you may want to pay $20 to find that perfect career.

Explore Occupations

If you already know of a few occupations that you’re interested in, start researching them either in your local library or online.  No matter what industry you’re interested in, you can always find great information online.  A great tip you can use is simply by looking for a forum where you can ask questions about a particular career.  For example, if you want to become a nurse and don’t know exactly what the job entails, you could search for “nursing forums” and find hundreds of people that already work in that job field.

Assess Yourself

A self assessment is the process in which you will gather more information about yourself.  A lot of career tests online will want to know a little bit more about your personality.  This helps them further understand you better and makes it easier for the career planning process.  For example, if you’re a sheltered shy person, you won’t to go into sales or do public speaking.

Set some goals

Career planning shouldn’t take you forever, instead it should be done in a reason time frame.  If you’re already attending high school, then you’re already on the right path to choosing the right career.  If you’re in your second year of college and you have no idea on what you want to do, then you may be in some trouble.  Set up some goals for yourself to figure out when you want to choose that career.

Career planning is extremely important.  Don’t just jump into a career because of money.  You’ll find out in your adult life that a fun job is a lot more exciting that a fat paycheck.  Trust me, you don’t want to drag through an eight hour workday just to feed the family.  Instead, find something you’ll truly enjoy so when you get out of college, you won’t regret your decision.
