How to Save Money as a College Student
posted by FindCollegeCards.comCollege students are known for their tight budgets. With high tuition, book, and board expenses it is easy to understand. When going to college, students don’t always have a whole lot of money since it all goes to school and the regular bills. As college students, we all know it is very important to start saving for our futures, and start planning ahead. When college students have so many expenses how can they start saving? Easy, there are a few things college students can do to start saving their money by putting it in the bank. Need some ideas, check some out below:
- Textbooks – If you can, find your textbooks online and purchase them. When in college you don’t need to worry about getting a bran new book, get one used. If it has the information in the book buy it, no matter what it looks like and its condition.
- Save on your gas money – There are many things you can do to save on gas money. Gas credit cards can save you up to 10% on your gas purchases. Also you can carpool and avoid going home in between classes. Doing these simple things can save you a lot more money that you might think.
- Grocery shopping – If you hate going grocery shopping due to the high bill at the end, you are in luck. There are many ways to reduce your grocery bill and maybe even cut it in half. One way, you can get a smaller shopping cart instead of a big one. (This helps you by deciding what things you really need due to the space in your shopping cart.) Also only by items that are on sale. Buying items on sale is the top way to save on your groceries. Never by anything that isn’t on sale. Instead, if you like one item a lot and eat it regularly stock up during the sale. Don’t just buy one on sale and come back the following week to get it for the regular price. Also use any coupons you possibly can. These will help save you a ton at the checkout!
- School shopping – Are you in need of new school clothes? If so, be sure to also get these all on sale. You never want to get anything that isn’t on sale, because it will go on sale eventually. Be sure to look at sales ads to see what stores are carrying hot deals for the week and stock up there. Also, don’t wait until the last minute. If you want to save the most money, get a few items at a time when you see the sale. This will not only keep you from a huge one time payment but also it will allow you to look around and get the best deals.
- Community College vs University – Try and do all your general education classes at a community college. You can get the same education by getting it at a cheaper price. This is the best way to save money. Who wants to spend more than they have to? It’s that simple.
- Going out for fun – Allow yourself only a certain amount of money a week to spend it on entertainment and leisure. This will make you feel guilty if you go over and happy if you save more!
- Set it aside – Also set aside a certain amount of money to go in the bank a week no matter what. If you don’t have discipline you don’t do it. Say “I’m going to put in at least $20 a week in the bank”. Once again you will feel guilty if you can’t and will want to make it up by putting in more next week.
There are many things you can do to help save your money as a college student. Yes, college can be expensive but take a look at your leisure activities. How much do you spend per week on everything? Try writing it all out and find what you spend most of your money on. By doing this you are seeing how much money you spend on each individual item and this can help you realize what you need to stop doing and start doing.

Some great tips there.
However, I’m not exactly sure on the community college vs. university tip. Isn’t there a bit of a difference in terms of the quality of the education you are receiving?

That is true Static! Some students don’t realize that they can save a ton of money by going to a community college for the first two years and then transfer to a main university.
Here in Michigan, you can take your first 2 years at a community college and then take those 2 years and apply it to a major university.
Your degree will come from the major university and the employer will never know you attended the university

This is great advice. If you do all of these things and still come up short on money there is a cool website called http://www.isleptthroughclass.com. It awards points to students for posting the notes they take in class and students can redeem the points for gift cards to Target, Nike, Circuit City, and more.
Membership is completely free and the site seems very popular. There tons of notes students can search for free and the earning potential is limitless…one girl just got $325.00 to Amazon.com!!!
check it out on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0IrVAIbAtA
