College cafeCollege is already expensive, and if you’re looking to save money on your food, since you have to eat everyday, here are some tips that you can use in order to save.

Cafeteria Food

Most college students start out in a dormitory and sign up for a cafeteria’s food plan. This is a good way to start.  Some cafeteria plans allow students to take as much food as they want within the cafeteria’s guidelines. So students are likely to eat well. In fact, they may eat more than they are used to and gain weight.  Students should keep health in mind and eat reasonably. Cafeterias usually have limited hours of operation. For example, the evening meal may be served from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Frozen Meals

Whether or not students live in a dormitory, they may be allowed to buy their own food and use certain small appliances, such as a microwave. Keep in mind that fire laws vary, so it is important to ask what the rules are. With a small purchased freezer, the student can store and prepare most frozen meals in a microwave with minimal dirty dishes. This option gives students freedom to eat their meals when their schedule permits.

Make Your Own Meals

For those students who have dormitory suites with a kitchen, or for those who find housing close to the college campus, cooking their own meals is more economical. It will require purchasing pots, pans, dishes, silverware, and some other supplies. The first trip to the grocery store may include purchasing basics like pasta, spices, sugar, and soups. Weekly grocery shopping should then include meat, fruit, vegetables, bread, and milk. It helps to plan at least a few meals before making the trip to the grocery store. If roommates plan to eat meals together, they can either divide up the total costs or take turns doing the shopping. Meals can still include frozen meals, in addition to easy ready-to-make meals, such as soup, sandwiches, or deli salads. There are also many easy-to-make meals, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, and spaghetti.  Add a piece of fruit and carrot sticks and it is a meal.
