Whether you’re going away to school or you’re travelling down the street to attend college, the whole atmosphere is going to be a great life experience. Not only is the college itself going to be foreign, the town around your college will be a mystery as well. There are many things you can do to adapt to the new changes. Here are a few ideas you can try in order to get adjusted to your new surroundings.
Get there early – If you’re going away to college for the first time, try and get there early. This way, if you get there early, you can start to adjust to your surroundings without having to worry about your classes. Many colleges will let you move in a few weeks early. Make sure you ask your school when you can move in, if you’re stay on campus. If you’re staying off campus then obviously, you’ll be able to move in at your leisure.
Contact the local chamber of commerce – Every city, no matter how big it is will have a chamber of commerce. If they don’t, simply check online to see if there’s website dedicated to the city. At the chamber of commerce, simply request a packet for new residents. They will be more than happy to give you one. In the packet, you’re going to find information about the city on things you can do throughout the year. You’ll also get a map on your surroundings.
Use the Internet – The Internet is probably your best tool. Use websites online such as TripAdvisor.comthat will show what to do in the area or use Google Maps to find things in the area like pizza places or a grocery store. You’ll be amazed on how much information you can find on the Internet alone.
Start checking the town out – Another great way to adjust to your college town is by simply hoping in the car and driving. If you live in a bigger city that doesn’t require a lot of driving, simply drive to the town and hop out and start walking around. If you know of anyone attending your college that’s interested in something like this, bring them along as well.
Ask the locals- Start attending the local coffee houses or grocery store. Strike up a conversation with the workers or customers walking around. Ask them questions you have about the town. Most of the time, they will be more than willing to give you some information.
No matter what college you’re attending, there’s always something to do around the town. College does take up a lot of time but when you find yourself having free time, make sure you take advantage of it! Life is very short and don’t regret sitting in your dorm room not doing anything.
