Every year, a challenge faces future college students and their families for those that are home schooled.  If you’re a family today that has a home schooled child or you’re  currently doing all of your coursework at home, I’m going to show you some tips that you can use when you’re looking to get into a college of your choice.

Research the colleges – It’s never too early to research a college.  When you start thinking of college, you should start researching colleges right away.  Gather information about the potential colleges admission requirements and also collect other data as well.

Contact the school- While you’re doing your research, if you find that the college doesn’t list their admission requirements when it comes to homeschoolers, I would call up the college and ask them personally.  All colleges vary when it comes to homeschooling.  You will find that some are stricter than others when it comes to proving grades, etc.

Don’t be discouraged- Every year thousands of homeschoolers apply for colleges and get accepted.  The worst thing that will happen is that you’re going to get a “no” for an answer.  Apply to any college you’re truly interested in and one that you truly believe you’ll be accepted to.

Take the ACT and SAT- If you want to increase your chances as a homeschooler, I would highly recommend that you take the ACT and SAT.  These tests play a huge factor when applying to a school.  The better your score is, the more likely you’ll get accepted.  Not only that, you’ll also want to make sure that you get letter of recommendations from important people as well that you think will influence the admission panel’s decision.

Prepare an essay – Just about every college you apply to is going to ask you to write out an essay on why you should be accepted, etc.  In this process, make sure that you point the reasons on why homeschooling has helped you become a better person.  I would advise you that you spend a lot of time on this.

If you’re either going to school at home right now or you’re a parent of a potential homeschooler, don’t get discouraged when it comes to college.  Many colleges accept homeschoolers and they most definitely don’t look down upon them.  Do your research on the colleges and follow some of the tips above and you’ll be fine!
