Whether you’re a student fresh out of high school or you’re a stay at home mom, a online university may sound appealing to you because of the fact you don’t need to go anywhere.  You can accomplish all of your work at home via the Internet.  If this sounds like something you’d like to do, there are a few things we need to look at before we find the perfect online school that suits your needs.

Look into costs – You have to treat online schools just as if you were looking for a on campus college.  Look into how much the classes are going to cost, how you’re going to fund them.  Are you going to get a loan?  or are you going to pay it cash?  Keep a log of how much each college costs and set it aside.

The creditability – Since you’re going to dedicate two years or more into your college, you’re going to want to go to an accredited university.  You’re not going to want to go to school for four years and find out that no employers want you because they have never heard of the college.  Try and get reviews on the colleges before you apply.

Look into a physical campus – An online college is nice but it’s also nice to know that there’s a college that you can actually talk into to ask any questions or even take a class if you’d like.  Most online colleges don’t have an actual campus but some do and some of the colleges are big.  Let’s take Central Michigan University as an example.  They have an online division.  Look into all the colleges around you and see if they offer college campuses solely online.

Meet with a counselor- Before you even sign up for those classes.  Call up and arrange a meeting with a guidance counselor.  If you can do it in person, do this!  If not, simply do it over the phone but I’d recommend you can find a school that you can walk into.  This will help you down the road, trust me.

Know where to search – When you’re looking for schools, you may run out of ideas.  Try websites such as DirectDegree.  These websites will ask you what you’re looking to get into and then provide you with a list of potential schools that will fit your needs.  The more options you have, the better off you’ll be.

When you’re in the search for the perfect online school, make sure you take your time and not sign up for the first college you look at.  As long as you take notes and do your research, you shouldn’t have a problem finding the perfect online school.
