Volunteering at school and collegeAs a college student, you probably already know that volunteering work is a great thing to have on your resume, but if you’re looking for particular volunteering work, I don’t blame you.  Many students each year love to volunteer in the field that they want to go into.  For example, if you want to become a nurse, you may want to volunteer at an assisted living home, hospital, etc.

How to find student volunteering work

Get something related to your field – When it comes to volunteering work, I would advise you that you check out things in your field.  If we take the example above, you wouldn’t want to volunteer on a farm, if you’re going to become a nurse, it doesnt’ make sense at all.  Instead, try and brainstorm places that you can work at to give you a better idea on what works best for you.

Meet with your college adviser – The first thing I would do is meet with your college adviser.  He/she will be able to tell you exactly where you can look.  I generally look for volunteering opportunities for registered charities.  I don’t want to volunteer with someone that’s going to make money off of my work.

Ask your friends and family - You’ll be surprised at how many people you know that volunteer with particular services.  Ask around, and see what they do.  If you like the sounds of it, you may be able to get in yourself in, and work with a friend.

Start your own campaign - If you have a creative mindset, you may want to think about starting up your own charity or volunteer work.  If you know someone that’s in need, or you know of a park that needs to be rebuilt, these can all help with your future job outlooks.  Gather up some friends, and do some good for the community.  Good, hard work always pays off!

Volunteering can be a good thing, but make sure you leave some time for work as well.  You want to treat this as a job.  If they start making you work 40 hours a week on a set schedule, you may want to re-think what you’re doing, and find something else.
