Just when you think you’re going to finish your 2 or 4 year degree, you may have that thought in the back of your head, where you’re thinking that you may want to drop out of college.   Is it a wise decision?  No!

While you have the thought on your mind, you’re probably wondering how many people drop out of college.  I did some research and found out what the exact college drop out rates are nationwide.

The following rates are as of 2007.  While the data is a little bit outdated, it’s going to give you a good idea on who’s saying in college and who’s dropping out.

The following drop out rates are for those that are from the age of 16 to 24 years of age.

Drop out rates by race (native-born):

  • White:  6%
  • Black:  12%
  • Hispanic:  11%
  • Asian:  2%
  • Pacific Islander: 6%
  • American Indian:  15%

Drop out rates by race (foreign-born):

  • White: 5%
  • Black:  8%
  • Hispanic:  34%
  • Asian:  4%
  • Pacific Islander: 12

Drop out rates by gender:

  • Male:  10.9%
  • Female:  7.6%

Drop out rates by age:

  • 16:  3.2%
  • 17:  5.3%
  • 18:  8.4%
  • 19:  9.9%
  • 20-24:  11.5%

Drop out rates by region:

  • Northeast:  7.1%
  • Midwest:  7.6%
  • South:  11.0%
  • West:  10.1%

As you can see, everything is going to vary depending on the region, the gender, and everything else.  You will also want to keep in mind that these stats are from 2007, so they may be a little out of date.

The majority of most college classes are able to graduate.  Many students tend to think that this number is a lot higher than what they really are.
