The most important thing that relates to your college career is your college major. While a lot of students go to college not knowing what they want, you’re probably not going to want to take that path because most likely you’re going to be taking classes that you won’t need if you do decide on a major in the future. If you’re one of the thousands of students out there that don’t know what they want to do, don’t worry, there are steps you can take. I’ve put together a few points you can use when it comes to deciding on your college major.
Start with the interests – Get a pen and piece of paper and start writing down everything you like to do. What do you do on weekends? What do you like to do with friends? No matter what you do in life, you’re most likely able to turn that into a career. If you like to play basketball, you could possibly go down the road of physical therapy for a sports team, an athletic trainer, etc.
Study careers – If you already know what college you want to attend, great. If not, that’s okay as well. What you’ll want to do is grab a book or brochure with all the programs that particular college offers. You’ll want to do a little research on all the careers that are available. You’ll find that there a lot of careers out there that will peak your interests.
Speak with your counselor – No matter what college you attend, you’re going to have a counselor. Set up an appointment and talk with them. They will have resources that you can use in order to find the right career. They are the experts and probably have dealt with people just like yourself, feel free to call them up and set up a time to meet.
Take a career test – There are career tests online or you can find one at your school. These type of tests will recommend careers that you would most likely enjoy. A career test is usually free and provides some pretty accurate results. It never hurts to take one if it’s free.
The thing to remember is not to be stressed out when you don’t know what you want to do. You’re not alone when you can’t choose a college major. Follow some tips above and hopefully this will lead you on the right path to your new career. If you find in the long haul that you don’t like the career you picked out, you can always change it.
