Dealing with a Bad College Professor
No matter what college you attend, you’re always going to run into that teacher that you just don’t get along with. Whether they give you bad looks or their grading system tends to be a bit biased, bad college professors are everywhere. Some say that when you have a bad teacher, you just need to deal with it but others say there are some tips you can use. Here are some tips you can use:
Don’t wait to change - The minute you find you’re not getting along with your professor or you’re having problems, don’t sit back and let them destroy your classroom experience. You’re there to learn in the long run, not suffer. The minute you find you’re not going to like this teacher, immediately find a back up plan. Chances are that there will be an alternate class that you can take. Make sure that when you switch to this class, the same teacher isn’t teaching or has anything to do with it.
Meet with your counselor - If you find you’re the only one that’s having trouble with this teacher, meet up with your counselor and discuss your problem. If the problem isn’t addressed, it will continue. Who knows? You could be the tenth person that has complained about this teacher. Your counselor can drive you down the right path if you’re having troubles. Remember, you’re paying the college and they are a business. They want to keep you there, so voice your opinion!
Check professor websites - Websites like RateMyProfessors.com is a great website to check out if you’re looking to get an opinion on your professor. See if your professor is getting good or bad reviews. If all the reviews are bad, chances are you’re not the only one that’s not getting along with him/her. Once the class finishes, make sure you leave a review.
Meet one on one - Most people don’t like this one but sometimes it can work. If you feel the teacher is being biased or they just don’t like you, arrange a meeting with them after class and ask them face to face. Most of the times, it can be settled and you’ll get your answers. Sometimes a teacher may be oblivious to how they are teaching and it can help them with their career. In the long haul, you’ll probably be helping both parties.
No matter how bad your teacher is, every student in life is probably going to deal with a situation like this. The best thing to do is handle in a professional manner and take the steps you deem that are necessary.
