In college, it’s no hidden secret that you have to write thousands of papers. While papers can get tiresome, there are probably some writing errors that you make and you may not know about. Now, I know I’m telling you about writing and I’m not the best writer either. We all can’t be perfect. I compiled a list of the most common writing errors that college students that tend to make on papers.
Mistakes on papers regarding specific words
One of the most common problems that students are a victim of is when they use a word but it’s spelt differently. Here are just a few examples of what I’m talking about:
- It’s vs. Its
- To, Too, and Two
- Affect vs. Effect
- There, Their, and They’re
- Lead vs. Led
- Where vs. Were
These are just a few of the thousands that students tend to make on a paper. A program such as Microsoft Word can only do so much when it comes to fixing grammatical errors. Make sure you use a dictionary or thesaurus as well when writing your papers.
Comma Errors
Let’s face it, commons are hard, and I’m even a victim of using commons, I’m awful with it! Since this is a blog and I’m not being graded, I don’t do much research. When it comes to college research though, you’re going to be graded and it’s important that you know how you use them. I found a few great resources that you can use when it comes to using commas.
These websites will help you get a better understanding when it comes to using commas. If you find you’re having a hard time using them, don’t be afraid to ask for counseling or ask your professor for assistance, that’s what they are there for!
Punctuation Problems
Another common thing that happens among college students is punctuation. From semi-colons to quotation marks, it’s important that you know what goes where. Purdue University has yet another great webpage that explains exactly what I’m talking about:
The Apostrophe
Yet another problem among students is the apostrophe. One of the most common errors on pages are with apostrophes. From indicating if it’s plural or if it shows a form of possessiveness, this can sometimes confuse some on thier paper. Another great resource to check out is Purdue’s writing lab page::
These are just a few of the many student writing errors when it comes to writing a college paper. If you even find yourself getting confused with any of these points, I highly recommend you find help with either a tutor of professor. With enough practice, you can become an expert writer in no time.
