When it comes to college and attending for the first time, you’re probably going to hear a lot of good and bad things about school. Like anything in life, some of them may be true, while others are a lie. So, we did our research and picked out some of the most common college myths when it comes to college.
MYTH: You need to know your career before you start college
TRUTH: Many students each year start college without knowing what they want to do. This is okay, but you should honestly know what you want to do by at least year 2. In the first year of college, you’re going to take a lot of general education courses regardless. This will give you plenty of time to figure out what you want to do in life.
MYTH: An unknown college isn’t good
TRUTH: These are so many colleges out there, it’s next to impossible to know them all. Just because you haven’t heard of a college doesn’t mean it’s not that good. Also remember that just because the college doesn’t have a top ten football team doesn’t mean it isn’t any good.
MYTH: Out of class activities reflect poor grades
TRUTH: There’s nothing wrong with having outside activities when going to school. It will come down to what you can balance between your classes and extracurricular activites. Just make sure you don’t do too much when it comes to outside the classroom.
MYTH: College is only four years
TRUTH: College may seem like it’s going to be four years, but many students fail to stay on track. Did you know that only one in four students finish school in four years? This means that you’re most likely going to be there for more than four. If you want to know more, see what the four-year graduation rate is for that school.
MYTH: Everyone’s experience is the same
TRUTH: This is like saying that everyone lives the same life. Sure, you’re all attending the same college, but is everyone going to experience the same thing? Absolutely not! You’ll take different classes, visit different parts of the school, and more.
MYTH: This is the best time of your life
TRUTH: This can be looked at as the best time of your life, but don’t feel you have to do everything now. Instead, always allow enough time to study and get good grades, because ahead of you will include tons of fun times such as owning your first home, having a family, etc.
MYTH: You won’t miss home
TRUTH: Many of you will get used to college quick but many others may miss home. This isn’t necessarily a myth but many feel they won’t miss home when they go, but when it comes to the truth, many students find out that they do.
MYTH: Many students go to college to party
TRUTH: When you go to college for the first time, you’re going to find that a lot of kids are there to study and not party. It’s like high school, you’re going to have those groups that like to keep to themselves. There’s nothing wrong with going to college to learn. That’s what you’re there for!
Hopefully by now, you have a better understanding at what myths are out there, and what the truth really is. With so many fake stories that roam around the college atmosphere, it’s hard to believe everything people say. I say let the experience do all the talking and sooner or later, you’ll be a pro in no time when it comes to college life.
