Choosing your college major is a tough task, but when you get some tips, and pointers, it makes the process just a tad easier.  Here are some tips that you can use in order to find the college major that best suits you.

Decide on the job you want to have

The major you choose for college should be based on the job you would like to have.  For example, if you’d like to own your own business someday, do not major in history even if it interests you.  Think about the lifestyle you would like to enjoy.

Ask yourself three questions…

1.  After I graduate, how do I want to spend my time? Do I want very little downtime outside of work, or do I want work to fit into specified hours of the day so that I’m free the rest of the time to enjoy other things?

2.  Do you want to live a life of many luxuries and a lot of time spent working, or do you want a simpler life and family?

3.  Is there a specific topic or industry I would like to work in?

Each position will require a mixture of qualifications and experience.  Some qualifications come with a degree, but many do not.  Some jobs will require graduate school, and some simply want you to have gained sufficient experience.  Decide if you are willing to put in the time earning qualifications to get the job you want.

Decide if you are willing to spend the money to earn the education you need

If you are not fortunate enough to have your school paid for by patrons, parents, or scholarships, you must decide how much debt and time you are willing to put into finding a job.  Education costs a lot of money, and often a student mortgages their future to gain the diploma. Make sure that the job you are going after will allow you to pay back your loans in your current situation.  Remember, there will be taxes involved and even $70,000 can go quickly.
