As a college student or even a high school, it’s always important to know what your GPA is because this is what’s going to determine if you get into a particular college, get on the dean’s list, etc. While figuring out a GPA is extremely easy, there are GPA calculators out there that can help you out when you don’t want to do the math yourself.
The formula to figure out your GPA is fairly simple and I”ll give you an example below so that you can see how it works.
First, we need to look at how each grade is addressed via points –
- A = 4 points
- B = 3 points
- C = 2 points
- D = 1 point
- F = 0 points
Let’s say this is your final report card at the end of the semester (we need to factor in credit hours and grade) –
- Algebra I – 3 credit hours — A
- Biology — 3 credit hours — B-
- Marketing — 4 credit hours — C+
- Business — 3 credit hours — B+
Now, we need to assign a number to each grade and multiply it by the credit hours. It would be 4 x 3, 3 x 3, 2 x 4, 3 x 3 or 12, 9, 8, 9. We now want to add them all up to get 38.
The next thing we want to do is add up our total credit hours which will be 13.
Now, let’s take our 38 credits and divide it by 13 to get a 2.92 GPA.
You probably realize it by now that it isn’t hard to figure out your GPA and it can all be done on a simple piece of paper but if you really don’t want to do the math in your head and I don’t blame you, I would recommend you check out the follow calculators online.
Try some of the calculators mentioned above or work your brain, whatever you decide to do, your GPA is important to you and it should always be known at the end of each semester to see where you stand.
