Now that college season is right around the corner, there’s probably a lot of things on your mind and I bet you haven’t even thought about safety.  Accidents and crimes happen all the time across the globe at college campuses, which you’ve probably seen on your local newscast.  While you can do things to prevent these incidents from happening to you, it’s important to know of a few tips that you can digest, so that you can be safe at your school.

Party safety

If you’re staying on campus, you’re going to encounter a lot of parties and while there’s nothing wrong with attending parties, it’s important you follow a few guidelines so that you can save yourself.  Women, especially should listen to these tips as most of these crimes such as rape and sexual assualt don’t happen as often to men.

  • Make sure you always go in groups that you know.  NEVER attend a party by yourself if you don’t know anyone around you.
  • Try and avoid excessive alcohol drinking.  If you drink too much, you may become a victim of sexual assault.
  • Make sure that if you do drink, you watch your drink at all times.  There are many drugs out there such as the date rape bill that can cause a lot of harm and danger.  Never leave your drink unattended!

On Campus Safety

Most of your college career will involve walking around your campus.  No matter if you college has a thousand people or tens of thousands, it’s always important to be on the lookout of potential mishaps or suspicious behaviors.

  • If you’re walking at night, make sure you that you’re always in a area that has a lot of light.
  • If you tend to walk alone, don’t.  Instead, try and find someone that will walk with you, so that don’t have to walk alone at night.
  • Make sure that you’re always aware of your surroundings.  Never be afraid to look behind you to see if anyone is following you.  If you suspect someone is following you, it never hurts to dial 911.

Dorm Room Safety

Just like walking around on the college campus, you’re going to spend a lot of you time in your dorm as well.  This is going to be your home away from home, after all.  Just because you’re in your dorm, it won’t necessarily mean you’re going to be safe.

  • Always lock your windows and door while you’re in your room.  No matter what time of day it is, you never know what can happen.  Just play it safe and lock all of your doors.
  • If you ever see anything suspicious happening around your dorm, never be afraid to report it to campus police.  It will always be better to be safe than sorry.

If you find that someone you don’t know is knocking on your door, make sure you don’t even answer the door.  Try your best to ask them who they are through the door.  If they won’t go away, call the campus police.

Being safe on campus isn’t that hard, it just takes some self responsibility and a lot of alertness.  As long as you’re aware of your surroundings and you’re familiar with your area, being safe at your college won’t be a hard thing to do.
