Apartments for College Students – Finding One
posted by FindCollegeCards.comKnow the Neighborhood
When searching for your college apartment, it’s essential that you get to know the neighborhoods that you could live in. Some neighborhoods could be closer to campus, but may have more expensive rental prices while other neighborhoods could be cheaper, but offer a much longer commute to campus. If your apartment is further away from campus and you don’t have a car, it’s a good idea to find out if there is public transportation nearby. You may also want to actually visit the neighborhood on a weekend to see how noisy or quiet it is. It’s also a good idea to investigate the crime statistics of the neighborhoods, too. Targeting the safest neighborhood is always the best idea.
Find Out the Real Costs
Before signing your lease, you want to review the contract carefully. Renting and paying for an apartment is more than just paying the monthly rent. You should review the deposit fees and stipulations for getting a refund. You should also find out what services your landlord will be covering as a part of the cost including heating or electric. Also investigate if there are any parking fees for your apartment. Lastly, you should consider a way of protecting your personal property. Acquiring renters insurance is a good way to do this.
Living with a Roommate
If you are planning on living with a college roommate, then you need to have agreements in place to ensure that you have the most harmonious living relationship. If you are sharing expenses, make sure that all names go on the rental agreement and that you have agreed in advance about how extra expenses like utilities, cable, and Internet are shared and paid for. After the basics of covering the expenses are taken care of then you must have policies in place regarding conduct and cleaning. Quiet study times may need to be spelled out and agreed on by all roommates to ensure that academic demands are met. Cleaning responsibilities should also be spelled out and divided equally among roommates, too.
