If you like the word, “free”, then I have some great news for you.  Many students, as well as adults always love to take more classes just for the fun of it.  If you don’t feel like going to a college campus and paying hundreds of dollars, I really don’t blame you!

Thankfully for the Internet, there are a lot of colleges online that are willing to allow you to take courses for free.  Yes, most of them aren’t going to cost you a dime.  Whether you want to take a math class, or even a science based class, a quick Google search can yield some fantastic results.

From doing some research online, it seems as if a lot of students online want to take some creative writing classes and I can see why.  When you learn how to write a good piece that catches someone’s eye, you can either potentially land great freelancing gigs, or even a full time job.  Heck, you can even start up your own blog and make money from that as well.

I did some research online and came up with what I thought were the best classes to take online when you want to learn a little bit more about creative writing.

  • Course #1 MIT: In the past, MIT made the news by stating that they are allowing free courses online.  They have a great selection to choose from and you’re going to find that you can learn everything form economics to writing.  Check out the courses link above to see what you can take advantage of today.
  • Course #2 BYU: BYU (Bringham Young) has a great selection of many courses that you can take online for free.  While their writing courses are rather limited, you can learn a lot about grammar, spelling, and other related materials all for free.  All they ask for is your e-mail address.
  • Course #3 University of Utah: Utah U has a great OpenCourseWare project where you can take advantage of some creative writing courses.  Chose from sub-categories such as English, history, and so much more.
  • Course #4 UMass Boston: UMass Boston has a few creative thinking courses, as well as English programs.  Keep in mind that these courses will always change, so keep your eyes peeled at universities such as these, as well as others.
  • Course #5  Utah State University: Another Utah college that offers writing courses.  They have a few intro courses, as well as expert courses as well.  There are a handful here that you can consider when thinking about taking some courses online for free.

If you’re finding that some of the free courses up above really aren’t suiting your needs, you may also look into searching for “OpenCourseWare” online.  By doing this, you will find major colleges that contribute to this program.  It’s a great way to find other courses besides creative writing online.
