High school students who will move to other school for college usually have some adjustment issues and problems. A recent study shows that commuters experience less adjustment issues than those who will stay away from their homes. Adjustment issues usually vary by gender, mission, course, affiliation, etc. Moving from high school to college takes the process of socialization and desocialization. Socialization means meeting new friends, classmates, neighborhoods, etc. Desocialization on the other hand means letting go some of one’s culture, belief, ideas, and others.

Common changes that require adjustment are family roles, academic demands, relationships, students subpopulation and social demands:

  • Family roles. Going back to a student’s high school days, a student’s family role is to clean the house, wash dishes, take care of your youngest brother, etc. However, when you are already in college, these roles will drastically change. Your new role is to study, just study (especially when you are away from your home). There are no more household chores to accomplish.
  • Academic demands. When compared to high school, college has higher academic standards: longer home works, fast-paced teaching, unannounced quizzes, and other pressures that will make your head ache.
  • Relationships. During college, your relationship to other people will really change. You must be friendly because you will meet different classmates every subject. You must live on your own and be independent with your parents.
  • Student subpopulations. In college, there are usually some clubs, groups, etc. These subpopulations may be a lot of different with peers that you develop during your high school days. Subpopulations in college are more active that during the ordinary peers in high school so this requires adaptation to the new environment.
  • Social demands. College students’ nightlife is active. Unlike before that your social life is delimited in going to the mall, collegelife is full of party and night-out. If you are the kind of person that has an inactive nightlife then you might be left out with your classmates.

Studying college is full of adjustment issues and problems. All you have to do is to adapt and be used to it. However, not all of these changes are helpful to you. You must choose what changes will be beneficial to you then apply it.
