Creating a career objectveWhen you’re ready to enter the real world, or maybe you’re already there, you’re looking at creating your resume for the first time, or maybe you’re even looking to touch yours up.  What you’re going to find out is that there are a lot of things that you’re going to want to “perfect.”

Today, I wanted to give you some killer tips that you can use in order to make a killer career objective.  I got a few of these tips from major HR people online that tell me that only a few stick out to them.  By following these tips, I can almost guarantee you that you can increase your chances of landing a gig.

#1 – Don’t apply for a job you can’t do

So many people apply for a job that they can’t do.  There’s no point in doing this, because you’re just wasting your time, and the HR departments time.  You will find out that many big corporations today have automatic software that pull out particular keywords out in a resume.  If yours are missing these, you won’t even be considered.  If you’re an engineer major, don’t go out, and apply for a nursing job.

#2 – Make it stand out!

The career objective is generally the first line in your resume.  You’re going to want this is stand out.  The point here is to sell yourself in a few words.  You don’t want to make it a paragraph long, nor do you want it to be boring, and 3 words long.  Instead, sit back, and think of something fairly creative.

#3 – Sell yourself

Put yourself into the HR’s shoes.  Why do they want to hire you?  What are you going to bring to the table.  Let’s look at an example for a second.

Let’s say that you’re applying for a furniture sales job.  Your objective could be something along the lines of…

To use my veteran sales skills in creating more revenue for your company.

You want to let them know that you mean business, and you can make their company thrive.  Remember, you’re going to be an investment for this company.

Attention is the key here.  You want to be short, sweet, and you want to sell yourself.  It’s really not that hard to create a successful career objective.  Sit back, think about what you want to write about, and let’s hope that you create something great!

As a 18 year old, you’re soon going to find out that there really aren’t a lot of jobs out there for you that are going to pay the bills.  Since many of us at 18 don’t have a college degree, it’s going to be fairly hard to make over $10/hr.  So, what happens if you’re looking for a high paying job as a 18 year old?

Well, whether you’re going to college, or you’re looking to start off a career, I wanted to give you some ideas on how you can find that gig.

Waiter / Waitress at a high end restaurant: Every town has a higher end restaurant, and you will find that many of them hire at age 18.  These are the places to get into, if you want to make some great tips.  You may like it so much that you’ll turn it into a career.   The only downfall is that you’re going to have to work mainly nights, and weekends, but you can easily bring home $100+ a night in tips.

Construction: Many people think that you have to have a degree in construction to even set foot on a project.  This isn’t the case.  There are so many construction crews looking for any type of help.  These jobs pay fairly well, and you can easily start off at $14/hour.

Sales: If you feel that you would be good at sales, this would be a great opportunity for you.  EVERY company needs a salesperson, and if you have what it takes to sell things, the sky is the limit.  Keep in mind that this isn’t for everybody.

Banks: Again, many teller jobs don’t require a degree.  These are going to be a little harder to get into, but you’re going to find that by getting in, you’re going to get great hours, and great benefits as well!

Tutoring: If you nailed a good SAT score, and you’re great in a particular topic, you can make a killing tutoring younger students.  Work 30-40 hours a week, and you can bring home $600!

When it comes to no degree, and being young, you can still make a lot of money.  Try great services like SnagAJob that focus solely on hourly rate jobs.  What you’re going to find out that there’s always a job out there for you, so don’t buy in the media BS.  Instead, search, find a good paying job, and pay off those tuition bills, or whatever other ones you may have.

free stuff for studentsDid you know that when you go to college, you can get free stuff just for being a college student?  Does it sound too good to be true?  It does to me, but I wanted to tell you some things that you can get for free, just for being a college student!

Grab a discount card: A discount card may not be free, but you’re going to get a load of discounts, as well as free items.  What you’re going to find out is that with some cards such as Student Advantage, you can save 15% at retailers, as well as get $10 off, etc.  It’s a great way to save money, and here and there, you will find that you can get free items.

Check out online free sites: You don’t have to be necessarily a student to receive free stuff, but there are a lot of resources online that you can head to, when you’re looking for free stuff.  In my opinion, the FatWallet free forum is one of my favorites, when searching for free goodies.  You have to act fast on these, because they don’t last long.

Hit Craiglist: Again, this isn’t for students, but search your area, and see what people are giving away for free.  Again, if it’s something good, you’re going to find that it’s going to go relatively fast.  If you live in a busier district, you will find that there will be a lot more compared to your smaller towns.

Recycling website: There are clubs, and communities online that you can use that are willing to recycle their items.  Most communities are free to join, but there are also some that are by invite only.  You will find that a quick Google search will pop up what you’re looking for.

You’re going to find that it’s going to be a lot easier to find something outside of the Internet, rather than searching online.  Remember, the free stuff goes fast, so you will want to act fast!

This is part 6 of 6 on the dorm room essentials

College is no different than High School, when it comes to supplies.  Now, when you talk about learning, and the whole atmosphere, then sure, it’s different.  Today, let’s take a look at what you should bring into your classroom, every time you’re ready to start your class.

By being prepared, it’s going to make you a better student, as well as a student that’s not going to feel embarrassed when you forget an item.  There’s nothing worse than “borrowing” an item from another student.

  • Backpacks – Make sure that you research these, when looking for one, since there are plenty on the market.
  • Calculator – If you’re going to take advanced math classes, highly consider a graphing calculator.
  • Folders
  • Highlighters
  • Index cards
  • Notebooks
  • Paper, and lots of it!
  • Paperclips
  • Pens and pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Staplers
  • Tape

These are going to be your basics, but every class is going to vary.  What you’ll find out during the first day of class is that most professors will give you a good checklist on what you’re going to need.  Be sure to get these items as soon as possible.

What you’re going to find out too is that you’re going to need textbooks as well.  I would highly advise that you look into getting your textbook outside on class on websites such as Amazon, and others.  On the top, we’ve created a great textbook search tool that you can use, in order to find the cheapest textbooks on the market today.

This is part 5 of 6 on the dorm room essentials

Your dorm room is basically one big bedroom.  You’re going to have the pre-made, uncomfortable beds, and not much space that you’re going to have to share with you, and your roommates.

There’s going to be a lot of things that you’re going to forget about, when it comes down to bringing things for your bedroom.  Today, let’s take a look at what you should bring to your dorm, when it comes down to everything bedroom related.

  • Bedsheets – Get something comfortable, and don’t be too cheap.  You’re going to be sleeping in them each night, and you don’t want to be uncomfortable.
  • Blankets – This is great for when you don’t want to go under the sheets.
  • Cleaning supplies – Bring your basics such as a duster, broom, and dust pan.
  • Clothes Hangers
  • Mattress pad – Trust me, the beds are uncomfortable, and you will want something that makes it better for you.
  • Night Light
  • Rug – If your dorm has hardwood floors, consider this to protect them.
  • Storage – Containers are great, because you want to be organized.  You won’t have a lot of closet space.

Now, there are other optional things that you can bring as well.  Items such as curtains, and posters can liven up your room, but you will find out that you don’t really need them.   If you don’t mind staring at boring walls, then I would save your money, and not go out, and purchase them.

When you attend college, the last thing on your mind should be, “how good my dorm looks.”  Instead, try, and save up your money, and get the bare necessities.  Save up your money, so that you can pay off your student loans in the future.
