You’re going to find that when you head to your dorm room for the first time, you’re not going to have a lot of space, and storage is going to be crucial.  Just a few weeks ago, I brought up some ideas of storing bigger items while attending school.  While most of you don’t have these options, there are little items that you can buy to organize your room.

Underbed Storage Chest - This chest makes storage wonderful, since it fits right under your bed, making it out of sight from everyone.  This particular chest has side mesh pockets, perfect for cell phone and ipod storage, as well as a zippered top, and handles for easy carrying.

Multipurpose Storage Cart - If you don’t want something that fits under your bed, you may want to consider this cart that fits just about anything.  This car sits 45 inches high, has 6 pockets, as well as 2 shelves, making it ideal for storage.  It also comes with 8 mesh pockets, and a removable laundry hamper.

Wired Storage Cube Set - If you’re looking for something reasonably priced, and easy to set up, you may want to look at this cube set.  This storage set comes with 4 cubes making it ideal to store everything from text books to your clothes.  It’s a great way to become organized in your dorm room.

Dorm Room Storage Rack - This rack is fairly small, but it can fit a lot of items that you have laying around.  This rack hangs right on your closet door, or your dorm room door.  This rack holds your dirty laundry, a duffel bag, your hats, and more.

All of these items are going to run you less than $50.  It’s a great alternative to keep your room nice, and tidy.  Be sure to check out some of these options, and see what works best for you.

Dorm room storageNo matter what college you attend, you’re going to find that you’re always going to need storage, because let’s face it, if you have a roommate, and your room is the size of a bathroom, there’s not much room.  Thankfully, if you do have a lot of stuff to store, there are some options out there that should fit your needs.

Look for local storage places

Every town has a storage place.  Check online to see what places in your area have storage garages that you can rent out.  If you live in a bigger town, you’ll find that there are a lot more options, so make sure that you compare prices.  If you’re in a smaller town, you may find that there are no options at all.

Check with your college

Before you go out and purchase a garage, you may want to check with your college.  Many campuses out there have on campus storage that you can use, if you’re a college student.  Check with the local office to see what they have in store for you, and how much it’s going to cost you.

Ask friends or family

I don’t know how much stuff you have to store, but you may want to check with your friends or family to see if they have any room.  If some of them do, you may want to pay them a few dollars each month for letting them store it for you.  Remember, your bedroom isn’t going to be as big as the dorm room you’re going to be in, so you’ll want to pack accordingly.

You can always sell

If you really don’t need some of the stuff, and it’s just taking up a lot of space, you may just want to sell it on websites like Ebay and Craigslist.  It’s always nice to get money as a college student anyways.  Just because you’re not using it, doesn’t mean someone else won’t.

Try some of these options when you want to store some of your goods.  Make sure that you compare prices to see what’s best for you.  We all know that college students aren’t loaded with money, and this is why it’s important that you do your homework.

Moving away, or from college is a stressful time, and it does take a lot of planning to move all of your stuff to your dorm room back to either your home, or your residence.  When it comes time for moving day, I have a few tips that you can use in order to make the move easier.

Pick a day and find help

Whether you’re moving away, or coming back home, you’ll want to pick a day in the future when you’re ready to move away.  I would highly recommend that you find someone to help you like a friend, or even your parents.  This is only going to make it easier for you to bring boxes in and out.

Know what you can bring

All colleges have rules when it comes down to living on their property.  Since it’s their property, and not yours, they can obviously set the rules.  Know ahead of time on what you can, and can’t bring.  The rules usually pertain to appliances, and bigger items like furniture, etc.

Don’t bring your whole house

College is only temporary, and while you’re not going to live there the rest of your life, you’ll want to pack only the things you need.  Bring entertainment, a TV, some bedding, etc.  If you forget the smaller stuff when you get there, you can always run up to the store, and purchase it.

Don’t forget the small stuff!

Packing is stressful, and while you’ll think that you have everything, there are going to be things that you did forget.  Don’t forget to bring the smaller things like your cleaning supplies, bathroom goods, and more.  The more you remember, the less you’ll have to buy.

Get as many boxes as possible

Boxes are the best way to move things around, and if you don’t have any moving boxes laying around, that’s okay.  Check with local businesses to see if they have any boxes laying around, as well as ask relatives, etc to see if they have some laying around.  The last thing that you’ll want to do is go out and buy some.

Check in with your college

When you arrive on campus, you’ll want to check in with your college.  They will supply you with your key card, or key.  This is when you should check out your dorm to make sure everything looks in tact.  You won’t want to be charged for something you didn’t damage.

After you check in your dorm, it’s all moving in from there.  If you have friends and family help, be sure to compensate them.  Buy them a pizza, or give them a gift card for the help.  Moving is hard, and once you’re done, you’ll feel accomplished, and hopefully at home!

When in college, we often think right away, what kind of groceries can I buy for a cheap price?  When we ask ourselves that, we think of things like fast food, ramen noodles, etc.  Although they may be cheap, they definitely aren’t healthy and nutritious.  It is very important that you get your vitamins and minerals, especially when in college.  We are so busy, are usually stressed out, are low on sleep, and are staying up every minute we can to study.  When we have busy schedules like that, our immune systems weaken tremendously, and need all the help they can get.

You CAN get groceries that are healthy, and cheap as well.  If you consider a few of these groceries below, you’ll be off to a great start, won’t put a dent in your budget, and will improve your health!

Fruits – You definitely need fruits to go on with your day and to maintain good health.  There are several cheap fruits out there that you should consider.  Things like bananas, apples, melons, oranges, etc are all extremely cheap, and will give you that boost of energy you need.

Vegetables – You also can’t go without vegetables.  Make a good salad, buy lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, spinach, broccoli, all of these for a cheap price as well!

Soups – We all have a favorite soup, and love eat it in the winter time.  Look through your soup isle, find a few that you’d like, and check the nutrition facts to make sure it’s okay.  Get ones with low sodium, high protein, and vitamins.

Lunch meat – If you get things like turkey, chicken, ham, and a low fat cheese, you will be getting your protein, and a great sub for a cheap price.  Add a few vegetables and now you have a sub from Subway!

Dairy – Definitely consider things like yogurt, low fat milk, eggs, etc to get your vitamin D, calcium and protein.  These things are a must, and will help you keep those strong bones!

Drinks – If you’re looking for healthy drinks for a cheap price, there is always water obviously which is one of the best things you can drink, propel if you like a little flavor without the calories, and a low sugar and calorie juice is always good.

If you consider a few of these cheap things, you’ll improve your healthy, your daily living, and you’ll add a lot of energy to your tired and worn out self.  Take care of your self, eat healthy, and pay the low price.
