We all know that college is quite a challenge because if it were easy, everyone would attend.  One thing that keeps people away from college is their most challenging subjects.  Everyone has that one subject that they really struggle in, avoid as much as possible, and receive lower grades in.  If this is you, and you’re currently struggling in one of your classes, there is hope that you can pass with good grades.  Most importantly is that we take action right from the beginning.  We know that we’re going to have a difficult time in this class, so before your grades drop too low, it is important to consider some of these tips listed below.

Attend – First of all, if you’re struggling in a certain subject, you must make sure you attend all the classes.  If you miss class because you simply don’t feel like going, you’re only going to get further behind.  So, go to class, and make sure you take advantage of the time because you’ve already spent money on it.

Groups – If you can, find people you can study with from the class.  This is a great way to make friends, and will help you understand the subject much better.  You can all work together, help each other, and you’ll find that you may be much more prepared for your next test!

Notes – Another thing that is very important in college is taking good notes.  When a professor is talking and lecturing, your pencil should be moving, and you should be taking notes.  Professors get up there to talk and lecture you on the things that you’re not familiar with.  So, the little time they have with you, are the most important words.

Tutor – If you’re struggling, can’t handle the subject by yourself, and you’re looking for extra help, don’t hesitate to get a tutor.  Tutors are there to help you, can help you pass the class your struggling in, and will be more help than you can imagine.

Positive attitude – For you to get good grades, you must have a positive attitude.  If you have a math test next week, and all you’re saying is "I know I’m not going to pass!", what do you think your brain is going to do?  It’s going to be negative, it will get frustrated easily, and you’ll want to give up.  So, before you walk into class each day, have a POSITIVE attitude.

Many college students struggle with a certain subject, and for them to pass, they consider these tips listed above.  College isn’t easy, it is a lot of work, and for you to feel good about the class, you need to have a positive attitude, and finally prove to yourself that you CAN do it.

Searching for a jobWhen searching for a job as a college student, it’s going to be hard in this economy since many others are looking for a job at the same time.   The good thing about a job search when you’re a college student is that you won’t need a $60,000/year job and you’ll be able to settle for a small part time gig at a local retail or fast food joint.  Many others that have got out of college or work full-time will probably avoid these jobs.

The Internet today is by far the best place to search for a job.  There are hundreds of websites out there that will help you find the jobs that you need for free.  I gathered up a few sites that I thought in my opinion are the best when it comes to searching for jobs as a student.

SnagAJob:  SnagAJob is by far one of my favorite sites on the web.  On this particular website, you’re going to be able to search hourly jobs only.  When you do a search, you’re going to find that it’s going to show jobs like retail, fast food and jobs that cater to a college student or someone looking for a hourly rate job.  It’s free to search and comes in handy when looking for a job like this.

Beyond: Beyond is a website that many people aren’t familiar with but I really enjoy it since it focuses more on niche jobs.  With over 200,000 jobs available at all times, it’s easy to find job openings in a career that you may enjoy.  The thing I like about this website is that you’re able to input what kind of job you’re looking for and you can set up alerts.  This way, whenever a job comes through, you’ll get an alert in your e-mail.

When it comes to job searching for college students, I would recommend you look into those two websites but there are services out there also that can help you find jobs as well.  With services like ResumeRabbit, they will place your resume on over 75+ job sites.  This will help you gain exposure if you’re looking for a job and don’t want to place your resume on a million sites at once.

When looking for a job, especially in this economy, it’s going to take patience.  Try these sites and many others to find a part-time gig or even a job that could result to a full-time position in the future.

Applying for colleges can get rough if you’re applying for more than one.  Many students have their eyes set on one college but they find out later that they are rejected.  This is why I say never get excited until you get that acceptance letter in writing.  If you find that a college wants to interview you, there are some common questions that many of them are going to ask.  As long as you come in confident and show them that you want to be there, you’ll have a great chance at getting admitted.

Let’s hear about yourself

Ah, the question that we hear everywhere from college to a job interview, it’s a simple question yet it has so much power because you want to make a great first impression with the college.  The key here is to make yourself stand out.  Let’s stay away from answers like “I’m smart and motivated.”, etc.  They are going to hear that five thousand times and forget about you.  Instead, think of about five sentences and tell them something unique.

Why do you want to go here?

A college wants a particular reputation and if you don’t fit it, you can count on not getting in.  Tell them exactly why you want to go there.  Tell them some facts about the school so it shows that you have done your research..  Tell them what separates this college from the all of the rest.

Tell me what major you’re going into and why?

Hopefully by the time you start college, you’re going to know what you want to major in.  If you don’t, this may hurt you because many colleges that conduct interviews are going to want someone that knows what they want in life.  Tell them why you chose your major and why it’s important to you.

What do you do in your free time?  Will you help on campus?

You’ll hear questions along this line asking you what kind of activities that you’d like to do in your free time.  You’ll want them to know what kind of things you’ll do around the campus.  Tell them your interests as well as what you’ve done in high school, etc.

How is this college going to help you down the road?

You’ll most likely hear some future related questions such as where you’ll be in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc.  They want to know that you have a vision and also want to see that you’re willing to set goals and accomplish them.

Tell me about some of the goals you’ve accomplished?

As I already mentioned above, colleges love students who set goals and achieve them.  If you never set goals, think of somethings that you’ve done in the past and accomplished.  Any great student is going to be one who knows what they want down the road.

Now obviously every college is going to be different when it comes to interviews.  You’re going to just want to be yourself and give educated answers.  Your goal here is to be unique.  You’ll want to be as independent as possible and steer clear of those silly cliche answers.  If you can do this, you can count on that college looking at you in great detail.

amazon_logo5b15d We all know that college can be extremely expensive.   With the costs of books, classes, and room and board, there is little money left to spend or save.  One way that college students can easily save money is through their textbooks.  College students underestimate the power of the Internet, and don’t realize how good of deals they can get.  If you’re looking for college textbooks for your future classes, be sure to consider some of these places to buy from.

Half Half.com is just what the name says.  Spend half of what you would pay anywhere else.  Find good deals on your college textbooks, type in what you’re looking for, and pay less, it’s that easy!

Bookstore – Although college bookstores tend to be more expensive than buying them online, you will see a good deal once and a while.  Just do your comparison shopping, write down the competitor prices, and see which one is the better deal in the end.

Book – College students spend tons of money on their textbooks.  It is easy to spend even hundreds, but why spend hundreds if you’re not going to refer to your book?  If you’re struggling in math, simply go page by page until you get it.  If you don’t take notes from the lectures they have in the book, and write them out until you understand what you need to do.
