If you’re a college student that has been feeling homesick, you’re not alone.  Many students who go away to college get some type of homesickness.  Going away to college can be very stressful and is a huge step in a young adults life.  If you’ve been homesick at college or if you have a child that is homesick at college be sure to consider some of these tips to help cure it.

Get together – When you were at home, you probably hung out/saw your friends and family on a daily basis.  When in college make sure you still see those important people.  Have them visit you at college, or come home for the weekend once and a while.  Don’t let college separate you from your close ones.

Make friends – If you don’t know anyone that goes to the same college as you or have any friends at your college, make some changes.  Make sure you are social and get to know some people at college.  Having friends on campus is the best thing you can do to help cure your homesickness.  When you have friends close by, you are distracted and forget that you’re not at home with your other friends.  You also will feel more comfortable going to school when you have a few close friends near by.

Decorate – When you move into your dorm room it is usually full of blank walls, and looks pretty blan.  Be sure that when you move in you decorate it up!  Make your dorm room feel like home so you don’t feel so foreign to your surroundings.  Bring your favorite items from home and be sure to place them in your dorm room.

Clubs – Check out what clubs your college has to offer.  You may find one that you’re really interested in.  Not only do clubs get you out and about but they are also a great way to meet new people and make friends.  When you have a busy schedule it is less common to think about being homesick.

Knowing the area – Also, when you arrive to your college make sure you get to know the area around you.  Knowing your surroundings is one of the best things you can do.  Once you know what is local you feel more comfortable going out to the local stores, and places in your area.  So when you’re feeling down and need to get out of your dorm room, you’ll have a place to go if you need it.

When you’re homesick at college there are many things you can do.  Think of what made you happy at home and bring those memories back.  Whether it is drawing, playing video games or hanging out with friends, anything will work to help cure your homesickness.  Just remember that you’re not alone and if you consider some of these tips above, you have a better chance of curing it!

Party – If you’re not the only one that is staying on campus for the holidays be sure to get some of your friends together to celebrate.  Throwing or attending a party is the way to go!  Get some friends together, plays some fun games, watch movies and just have a good time.

Make dinner – Whether you’re staying at campus on Thanksgiving or Easter, it is always fun to make a nice dinner.  Invite as many people as you’d like or invite people to come up and see you.  If you know of someone in the same situation hang out with them and have a nice dinner.  If not them, and you have a significant other that is the perfect way to celebrate your Thanksgiving as well.

If you or someone you know is homesick at college, you’re not alone.  Getting homesick in college is a very common thing among all students.  It is the time in their life when they realize they’re an adult and they are away from their family and friends.  Although many college students get homesick, there are many different reasons for their homesickness.  What are the main reasons college students get homesick?  Read below and see if these are the reasons you or someone you know is homesick.

Friends & Family – Our friends and family members are the people that know us the best.  We can rely on them to make us happy and have a good time.  When they’re not around things start to seem harder, and there is less motivation because we have to motivate ourselves entirely.  If this is the problem that you’re facing you must keep in mind a few things.  They aren’t gone forever and they can always visit you.  They’re just a phone call away!

Far Away – For some students it is the distance that bothers them.  They realize that they can’t just go home in a few minutes, and that their family and friends are farther away now.  Although distance is a scary thing, you can’t let it bother you because your home, your pets and the people that are close to you are just a car ride away.

New- College students also feel down because they feel like they are the “new” ones, even though many college students are starting their first year as well.  When it is a college students first year, they all go through the same things.  Moving in, meeting your roommate, and starting school.   It is a big step, yet everyone who is at the campus has gone through it as well.  If you’re really having trouble with this issue be sure to ask others how they managed and adapted.

Class – When in college, there is a lot of stress.  The majority of the stress comes from the homework and can put a huge damper on you.  It may seem like all the classes are just asking so much of you and that you just need a break!  Once they all pile up, stress comes into play which makes you not want to be there.  Although all the work can be very hard to manage, you can’t let it get the best of you.  Simply show yourself that you can do it, get good grades and you’ll be stronger than ever.

Home – Another thing that is hard to adjust to is your dorm room.  If your dorm room doesn’t feel at all like home be sure you make it like home!  Nothing will make you sadder than blank, white walls and no pictures, nothing.  Instead dress them up, take what you had at home and apply it to your dorm room.  A room that feels like home is much more welcoming than a blank, cold room.

There are many reasons for homesickness in college students.  If you or anyone you know applies to these reasons, try to figure out a way to spring past them.  If you live unhappy the first couple weeks, what’s going to make you happy in the next year or two?  Start out with a good attitude and figure out ways to help you avoid getting homesick entirely!

If you’re going away to college for your first year you may be wondering if you’re going to get homesick.  Getting homesick in college is a very common thing that most students get when they first arrive.  They finally realize that the campus is their home and to get back home they must drive for quite a while.  Going to college is supposed to be a fun time in a college students life and you can’t let getting homesick spoil your fun.  If you want to try to prevent homesickness read below and see if you can avoid it as much as possible.

Keep in contact – When away at college most students don’t have time for the things they used to.  When students are as busy as they are it is hard to find time for the things that matter most.  Be sure that when you’re away at college, you keep in contact with all your close friends and family members.

Set a time and day – To make sure you keep in contact with your close friends and family members be sure to set a time and day for you to talk or hang out with them.  Whether you’re calling them or they come up for the day, be sure you make it a routine.  Have all your studying and work go around that one day or specific time so that you can always keep in close contact.

Pictures – Pictures say thousands of words and there is nothing better than bringing back old times when you’re homesick.  Place tons of pictures around your dorm and other things that have a lot of meaning to you around your dorm as well.  You want to make sure that you feel as close to home as possible and that your dorm room is like your room back at home.

Favorite items – When you first get to your dorm room plan how you can make your dorm room as close to the room you had at home.  Whether you use the same comforter and have the same bed style, or you have your bookshelf and other items near you, do anything possible to make it like home.  There is nothing worse than living in a boring room that doesn’t feel anything like home.

Friends – When you get to school be sure to be very social.  You want to make as many friends as possbile.  These friends that you meet in college can help you in school while you help them, and you can also make a life long friendship out of them.  If they’re in the same classes as you they most likely have the same interests and future plans as you.  Talk to them, you’ll be suprised how many people are in your shoes too!

There are so many things you can do to prevent getting homesick in college.  You just have to use your imagination, create a home like dorm room, meet new friends, and keep in contact with your friends back home and family members!  Don’t like getting homesick ruin your time in college!
