This is part 4 of 6 on the dorm room essentials

No dorm room isn’t complete without electronics.  In order to keep yourself entertained, as well as keep you going during the day, there are some electronics that you’re going to absolutely need.

I made a small, yet simple list of items that you should consider for your dorm, when it comes time to bring items up to your dorm room.

  • Alarm clock
  • Blank CDs / DVDs
  • Camera – Video camera, as well as a camera.  You’ll need this for some projects, and it’s great for memories as well.
  • Cell phone – If you can’t afford a cell phone, consider using free services online to call such as Skype, or TextYourBuddy for free text messaging.
  • Chargers – Bring chargers for everything that you have.  Things such as your cell phone, laptop, and more.
  • Computer – Obviously, this is a huge essential.  I would highly recommend a laptop, or netbook, so that you can take it to class.  Check out the best netbooks in 2010 post that I created a few days ago.
  • Fan
  • Laptop lock
  • Lamp
  • Power strip – Great to control all of your electronics in one location.  Also, going to protect your equipment from power surges.
  • Printer – You’re going to need to print papers all the time, this is essential!
  • Speakers for computer

These are the main essentials that you’ll need when it comes down to your electronic essentials.   By looking at the list, you’re going to find that some are essential, while some may be optional.  It’s up to you to decide on what you want to bring.  You may find that during the school year, that you’ll need some of these.  For now, bring what you think you’ll need, and go from there.

Sadly, you’re going to have to do laundry in college.  No longer can you rely on Mom, and Dad.  Now that you’ve become an adult, and you’re ready to live on your own, it’s absolutely essential that you bring even item necessary, when it comes down to doing your laundry.

What you’re going to find out is that there are going to be a lot of things that you’re going to miss out on.  Rather than purchase them up at college, it’s a lot easier to be prepared ahead of time.

Here’s a list of items that I would recommend that you bring up to college.

  • Bleach
  • Fabric softener
  • Laundry Detergent – There’s a lot of these, and you don’t have to spend $25 to get a good bottle, the name brand will do just as good.  I would recommend buying bulk
  • Laundry bag - You don’t want to just carry your laundry in your hands.  Get a bag for both your clean, and dirty clothes.  It would be ideal to label each one.
  • Iron / Ironing Board – Get one that’s fairly small, so that you can fit it in your room.
  • Stain remover – Grab a smaller pen that can take out the smaller stains.  Trust me, there will be times when you have to remove smaller stains off your clothing.

Laundry really isn’t that hard.  You’re going to have to do the whites with the whites, and make sure the colors go with the colors.  As long as you don’t mix the two, you’re not going to run into much trouble.  Be sure to have the essentials up above, and you will be good to go!

When you’re ready to head off to college, you really don’t think about your clothes.  You’re probably just going to pack up a few shirts, and pants, acting like you’re going on a very long, extended vacation. While most students treat it this way, they soon find out that they missed out on a lot of stuff.

Instead of calling up Mom, and Dad to bring you some items, there are some things that you can do, in order to have everything to come on hand.  Here’s what you should have, when it comes down to your clothing.

If you’re missing out on a few of these items, or maybe you’re on a budget, check out eBay for some great deals on just about anything.

  • Belt
  • Flip flops – Again, grab these when you’re ready to take a shower!
  • Pants
  • PJs / Nightwear
  • Raincoat
  • Robe
  • Shirts – Bring all types such as your T-shirts, Sweatshirts, and more.
  • Shoes – If you have only 1 pair, I would recommend bringing at least 2-3.
  • Shorts – Make sure that you have lots of them, if you live in a warmer climate such as Florida, or Arizona.
  • Snow stuff – Bring things such as your boots, winter jacket, gloves, and more.  You won’t think about this stuff when it’s warm out!
  • Socks – Bring plenty of these!
  • Sporting Goods – If you’re into sports, or going to play them, bring your shorts, and shirts.   These are great for the gym as well.
  • Suit – Not sure if you’re going to go anywhere fancy, but make sure you bring something nice, just in case.
  • Underwear

As you can see, you probably scanned over the list, and already forgot something!  Make sure that you bring everything on this list, so that you don’t have to go out, and purchase something, or call up Mom and Dad to bring it to you.

This summer, or any season really, it’s going to be time for you college students to head down to your dorm, and start unpacking.  If you were like me, you’re going to miss out on a lot of items, because you’re just not going to think about it.

Today, let’s focus on the bathroom.  I wanted to show you exactly what you’re going to need, when you’re ready to unpack items for your everyday bathroom needs.

  • Backpack – Something small that can carry all of your items.  It’s a lot easier to do this.
  • Brush
  • Clippers for your fingernails.
  • Dental Floss
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine products (makeup, etc.)
  • Flip flops – This is essential when you’re taking showers in a public domain.  It’s a great way to prevent athelete’s foot.
  • First Aid Kit
  • Hair Dryer
  • Hair spray, or gel
  • Lotion
  • Medicine (Motrin, etc)
  • Mouthwash
  • Perfume
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Towels for everything (hand, shower) – You will want to make sure that you can load up on at least 7-10 of these, just in case you get lazy, when it comes time to laundry.
  • Shaving cream, as well as razors
  • Shampoo and Soap (don’t rely on the college for this)
  • Q-tips

These are the main items that you’re going to need.  Obviously, there may be some other items that you may want to bring along.  What you’ll want to do is simply look at your bathroom today, where you’re currently living.  Grab a checklist, and write down everything that you use that day.  This will make it easier as well.

Print out the checklist up above as well, and it’s always better to be safe, than sorry when showing up at your dorm!
